JOB TITLE: LEGAL ASSISTANT, DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE (Circuit Paid)

JOB SUMMARY: The Legal Assistant position performs legal, secretarial, and clerical
tasks for the District Attorney and his/her support staff for the Waycross
Judicial Circuit which is comprised of six (6) counties. The required skills include
knowledge of legal procedures, documents, forms, and terminology, as well as a
proficiency in general secretarial procedures. Confidentiality and compliance with
office policy regarding daily access to privileged legal and sensitive information are
essential. Most work is performed under the general supervision of the District
Attorney and his/her support staff; however, this position requires a detail-oriented
person who has the ability to organize and prioritize assigned tasks, in addition to daily
workload, paying special attention to deadlines.

DUTIES and REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:
Typical duties Legal Assistant may encounter and related skills, knowledge, and abilities
required; however, this list is not all-inclusive and may vary, according to education and
experience:
•Create and maintain case files. Must use office database software program to
log entries of new cases, regularly updating their status and closing upon final
disposition. Includes general filing.
•Request and provide information.
•Compose routine correspondence to obtain necessary reports, criminal history
records, and other documentation from multi-jurisdictional law enforcement
agencies and court personnel, as well as other prosecutors and state agencies.
•Respond to inquiries in a courteous manner and provide information to judges,
multi-jurisdictional law enforcement agencies, and court personnel, as well as
defense attorneys, victims, witnesses, and general public if entitled and in
accordance with laws and office procedure.
•Maintain confidentiality in all communications.
•Receive and screen visitors, telephone calls, and mail.
•Perform general receptionist duties for office staff, including: determine nature of
their business; appropriately answer questions; and direct inquiries to proper staff
member or other agency. Requires an understanding of office and legal
procedures.
•Sort, open, date, and log time-sensitive incoming mail and legal documents;
distribute to appropriate staff.
•Court preparation. Maintain calendar to ensure no conflicts in scheduling court
appearances.
•Organize case files on court calendars.
•Review reports from various law enforcement agencies in case files and, if
necessary, request supplemental reports and other required documentation.
•Compose standard letters to victims, witnesses, and law enforcement, requesting
written statements and information pertinent to cases.
•Assist staff attorneys in preparation of discovery materials for defense attorneys.
•Maintain "on call" witness list.
•Courtroom assistance.
•Provide support for staff attorneys on court dates.
•Record relevant case information and dispositions, notify witnesses if and when
court appearances are required, and prepare necessary paperwork.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepare and file documents in appropriate court. Must
have knowledge of formatting various legal documents and use of computer word
processing software, as well as automated database software applications. Operate
standard office equipment including a copy machine, fax machine, and computer. Must
be able to use appropriate program applications for assigned tasks. May attend
meetings as representative of department. May aid supervision of part-time secretary.
Assist other office personnel as needed.
